Making foundations for the future

Joel has been working with the carpet fitters and myself for a couple of years now and it’s been a great learning experience for him. Earlier this summer we headed over to Loughborough in the UK so that Joel could undertake some further training, both at a foundation level and to cover specialist areas, such as laying vinyl flooring.

All the training took place at the Flooring Industry Training Association – and I am proud to say that Joel successfully completed both courses and received his certificates!

The tuition is a mixture of classroom based study and hands-on work, to gain first-hand experience of the various carpet fitting techniques.

The first certificate was a foundation course in carpet fitting where Joel learnt the correct method of fitting carpets. This knowledge provides every carpet fitter with the essentials they need to do their work professionally on a day-to-day basis.

The second course covered how to properly fit Cushion Floor Vinyl. Fitting vinyl is of course very different to carpet – you cannot stretch it, for starters! Joel was taught the right installation methods which should be used. A good example of this is in the sub-floor preparation. This will vary according to the whether it is a concrete (using a self-levelling screed or a wooden base (plywood), as unlike carpet there is no underlay involved.

It was a great few days for Joel – he picked up some handy new techniques and we have also updated his toolkit with some of the items he used on the course. Onto the next project!
