It’s the age of the train… fitting luxury carpet on a Pullman carriage in France

There is something magical about trains, don’t you think?

We all love the chance to travel in style aboard a beautiful train carriage, with its classy interiors and ornate upholstery.

Recently Joel and I travelled down to an engineering factory workshop in Clemont-Ferrand, along with Tony and Paul, two of our France based installers. The workshop specialises in restoring train carriages, and on this occasion we were required to lay carpet in a Pullman carriage. The carriage – called Cygnus – is owned by the Belmond group. You may recall that earlier this year we fitted carpet in one of the company’s luxurious boats, Napoleon.

The company supplied the material, choosing a Wilton carpet manufactured by Grosvenor from an original and unique design proposed by famous film director Wes Anderson. Grosvenor is a famous brand with a long heritage; it was originally known as Woodward Grosvenor and is a very old British weaving company.

Two designs were supplied for fitting in two separate sections of the carriage  – the open carriage then 2 coupes, or compartments with fixed seating.

The Pullman carriage is one of several owned by Belmond and was originally built back in the 1920’s – so it is now a century old. Over the years, these wonderful carriages have journeyed thousands of miles across not only the UK, but Europe too. On those many journeys, they have carried royalty, the rich and famous – and no doubt more besides!

Today, you too could be a passenger… and enjoy a truly unforgettable experience on board this  lovely train, which is now based back in the UK.

We would like to thank the team at the workshop for looking after us and also the team at Belmond for this opportunity. It was great to enjoy a day reliving the days of steam and to be a small part of this superb restoration.
