Carpet & Creativity at the Château Montfort 

Deep in the beautiful Béarnaise countryside and close to the Pyrénées is the delightful Château Montfort. Overlooking the picturesque waters of the Gave D’Oloron, this pretty chateau is the home of Australian couple Sara Silm and her husband. Last month, we travelled to this lovely part of South West France to undertake our latest carpet project, including fitting Roger Oates stair runners to its elegant staircase.

The chateau itself has an interesting history and was originally constructed by a French general. The architectural style is that of a Béarnaise Maison de Maitre, with towers added shortly after. Later, the chateau was bought by the family of King Leopold III of Belgium; and in 2015 Sara bought the property.

Sara has a passion for colours and textures, so it is no surprise that the furnishings of their home are stylish, comfortable and look magnificent. In fact, Sara is so passionate about sharing her creativity that she has recently published a book on the subject: How To French Country, which explores the colours, textures and patterns that she has used at the chateau (you can order a copy here: https://chateaumontfort.co/how-to-french-country-book ).

Back to the carpet! The Roger Oates’ stair runner is of the style Mila and Indigo colour. It was particularly interesting to fit as there are two right-angle turns on the staircase. The corners were mitred and hand-sewn at the Roger Oates factory. In the salon we also fitted Sisal Herringbone earlier in the year. All in all, it looks fabulous!
